On Friday July 17th, Wizards of the Coast will be releasing their last Magic: The Gathering core set “Origins”. With this they were able to create a wonderful set of story lines with each of the most known Planeswalkers.

Jace Beleren, Chandra Nalaar, Gideon Jura, Liliana Vess, & Nissa Revane through the Origins set will have their lives story revealed. Their origin stories will include family & friends, where they grew up, & how they were trained to become the powerful beings that they are. Along with the release of this new set Wizards of the Coast has provided some great background stories through the Uncharted Realms archive section of their website.

This new set will bring forth some new legendary creatures: Hixus, Alhammerret, Kothophed, Pia & Kiran Nalaar, & Dwynen. These legends were in some way responsible in shaping the lives of the most elite of the elite Planeswalkers. With their introduction to the game it adds a new flavor to the game.

Origins also introduces a few new mechanics to the format. The first of these new mechanics is called “menace”. Creatures with menace must be blocked by two or more creatures. The next is “renown”. Creatures with renown are give a +1/+1 token for dealing combat damage if they already don’t have renown. The third & last of the new mechanics “spell mastery” gives the spell caster either an additional effect for having two or more instants or sorcery cards in their graveyard at the time of casting.

In my opinion some cards to look for amongst the obvious legendary creatures & Planeswalkers are Enshrouding Mists, Aerial Volley, Talent of the Telepath, Demonic Pact, & Goblin Glory Chaser.

Now I have already been through the pre-release event & I pulled a few good cards like Thropter Network, Avaricious Dragon, & Sword of the Animist. I also saw half of the players pull a Planeswalker. I’m hoping that the Planeswalkers will be pretty easy to get a hold of since they are what this entire set is about. I didn’t do too well in the event but that won’t prevent me from playing in a draft now & then.

Be ready to have some fun with this awesome new core set. It may be the last but it may be the best. It has an over-all great story & feel to the game play.
