There are so many interesting locations to go to around this wonderful world of ours. I, unfortunately, am not a world traveller. It would be a dream to travel & teach people to play games in each of the four corners.
It would be a dream to experience the different cultures. Luckily, those who game & can not travel, can experience a variety of cultures through playing games.
That brings me to the game of Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture. Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture is a game for one to four players, ages ten years to adult, & could take twenty to forty minutes to play. It is designed by the team of Sarah & Will Reed who are best known for their game of Project Dreamscape.
Here is a little history of Oaxaca. Oaxaca (pronounced WA-HA-KA) is a free & sovereign state located in Southwestern Mexico. Oaxaca has a very rich history that goes back almost 13,000 years.
In that time Oaxaca has become a large tourist destination. People from around the world travel to Oaxaca not just for the archeological sites but also for the crafts the locals make.
In the game of Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture, each player takes on the role of a Oaxacan handicraftsman. It is the job of each player to roll dice to collect resources & turn them into works of art.
Once a player turns them into a handicraft, the item is then placed into the Market Stall for display. The crafted cards that are displayed in each player’s Market Stall may give a bonus along with giving points.
At the end of the third round of play, each player will total the points on their handicrafts in their Market Stall. The player with the most points wins the game.
Oaxaca is currently running as a project on Kickstarter. There is a ton of artwork & a few videos that you can watch here: Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture. This Kickstarter project will end on July 3rd, 2017. It will be published by Undine Studios.
The tiers are pretty straight-forward. The $5 tier offers the print & play version with updates of the game. The next tier up offers the physical version for $30 plus the final print & play version. The next tier up from the, the $45 tier, offers the physical version, final print & play, & a roll up 10″x15″ game mat designed by Derek Bacon.
Now the final tier of this Kickstarter project offers everything in the $45 tier. But that isn’t all. This $100 tier will get whoever is backing it a beautifully crafted laser-cut game box & four authentic woodcarvings straight from Oaxaca.
I’m loving the special game box with the final tier.
Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture is a beautifully artistic dice game. It teaches the players about what goes into making these wonderful pieces of art that is sold each day in the market places of Oaxaca. Definitely a game that a family can set up in no time & have fun learning about the rich culture while they play.
Time to get artistic & game on!
