After months of being placed in dry dock, the ships are about to resume their missions through the Star Trek universe. Wizkids/NECA have finally announced some new & fresher content for Star Trek Attack Wing.

In the first of many ship packs coming to a game store near you will be the U.S.S. Grissom.

Let me start off by giving you a little background on the U.S.S. Grissom NCC-638. The U.S.S. Grissom is an Oberth-class starship. It was traveling to the Genesis Planet with Lieutenant Saavik to search for Spock when it was destroyed by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey commanded by Commander Kruge.

The named ship U.S.S. Grissom will be a fairly cheap ship to add to your fleet at 14SP. It is a pretty tough ship with three shields & two attack. It will, however, lack in shielding with just two shields & three hull for protection. It will also have two of each crew & tech slots.

USS Grissom

The real interesting part of the U.S.S. Grissom is what happens to it after it is destroyed. Once destroyed, the attacking ship will have to discard a crew upgrade. If it can not, then it will get an auxiliary token placed next to it.

Captain J.T. Esteban will be the captain piloting the U.S.S. Grissom. He comes in at a cost of 2SP & has a skill level of 3. The fine captain doesn’t have an elite talent trait but the elite talent “Captain’s Discretion” that comes along with this pack can be attached to Captain Esteban. Captain Esteban allows up to two crew members to move off of the U.S.S. Grissom when it is destroyed, even if transporting the two crew members to another ship would exceed its restrictions.

Four crew members will be tied into the U.S.S. Grissom. Three new & one old.

First there is David Marcus. The crew upgrade costs 3SP. He allows a player to discard him in place of another character that must be discard. He also allows a player to discard him while defending to add an evasion token to the ship.

Next up is Saavik. This would be her second card in the Attack Wing universe. Saavik has a very unique ability. She has a ranged ability. This ability allows her to change a blank on a defensive roll to an evasion. This happens when the ship is in a range of one or two of a planet token. At a cost of 1SP she is going to be a great add-on to any ship’s crew.

The Federation Helmsman is the third crew upgrade for the U.S.S. Grissom. This crew upgrade, as an action will allow a player to place an auxiliary token next to their ship to perform a white 1 forward, 1 left bank, or a 1 right bank. The Federation Helmsman comes in at a 3SP.

So the oddball of this group is William T. Riker. This card was originally placed in the Pegasus expansion pack. The difference in this over the original is the new card format. He is a crew upgrade that cost 4SP. William T. Riker allows for the Captain Skill to be modified with a +3. On top of that if the ship’s captain is disabled then the ship’s captain skill remains at 5. His remaining ability flips the “Injured Captain” or “Communications Failure” damage card over when received.

Rounding out this ship pack are the three tech upgrades.

The first of the three is Comm Station. It a cost of 4SP it can be added to any ship to add an extra crew slot. Comm Station will also allow a player to disable it, during the Activation Phase, to substitute the Captain skill on this ship with target friendly ship within a range of one to two.

The second tech upgrade is the Genesis Effect, very thematic for this pack. At 2SP the Genesis Effect, during Setup, allows the ship’s owner to place a 5SP crew upgrade face-down underneath this card. During the End Phase, while being in range of one to three of a planet token, the player will flip over the crew upgrade & place two time tokens on the crew upgrade. All shields must also be disabled. After the time tokens are removed then that newly born crew member is placed onto the ship, even if it exceeds the ship’s restrictions.

Last but not least is Close-Range Scan for 3SP. This tech upgrade, during the Activation Phase, allows a player to disable a shield if it performed a scan action. This allows for a scan action to be add to the ship.

The U.S.S. Grissom is the first on Wave 1 of the new card packs for Star Trek Attack Wing. It is a fresh new look for STAW with the new card formatting & new iconography. I like the new look of the text on each of the cards.

What I would have loved to have seen is a Mission added into this pack. Can’t get everything we want, right? I am curious as to what new things Wizkids plans on doing with future card packs because I found it interesting that they added William T. Riker to this pack. Maybe this will be something special for each pack going forward to get newer players into the game.

Let’s go boldly where no one has gone before & game on!
