Years ago I would never have known or cared what gerrymandering was. I had never heard of the term & it wasn’t something we learned in civics class. Over the years I learned & studied what gerrymandering actually was. I discovered that it was nothing new since the first case of “redistricting” was in 1789 before the first U.S. Congressional election.
Gerrymandering can be a problem for one political party or the other. And who would have ever thought that something like gerrymandering could become a fun-filled game?
On July 10th, 2018 Gerrymandering will launch on Kickstarter. Mapmaker: the Gerrymandering Game is a game for one to four players, ages eight to adult, & may take anywhere from thirty to forty-five minutes to play.
In Mapmaker: the Gerrymandering Game each player will take on the role as one of four political parties: Red Elephants, Blue Donkeys, Yellow Porcupines, or Green Leaves. The one goal is to win the next election. And the way to do that is to redraw the districts on the map, but the main problem is that everyone else can do the same thing.
All players will start the game with the same number of voters. Each player will then place four district borders each turn. When a district is closed off, the party with the most voters, in that district, claims it. At the end of the game, the map will become sectioned into those districts. The political party with the most districts wins the game & of course the vote. If there is a tie, then the party with the most swing votes will win the game.
In reality I have seen some odd looking district maps & in Mapmaker: the Gerrymandering Game it is no different. The districts can get really odd looking. Players will need to be quick with their strategy to make sure that they take the lead.
It is important that we make sure that things like gerrymandering stays to gaming. No matter what party you are affiliated with gerrymandering is a bad thing for politics.
Mapmaker: the Gerrymandering Game has launched & will be on Kickstarter until August 7th, 2018. There are definitely some interesting things happening with this project. For example the “State Pack” for $70 the backer will receive a copy of the game & the governor or a state legislator you reside in will also receive a copy. And for $350 the “Supreme Pack” can be backed. Not only will the backer receive a copy, but so will all nine of the Supreme Court Justices. This may just be the best one.
If interested in back Mapmaker: the Gerrymander Game can be backed here: Mapmaker: the Gerrymandering Game. Believe me, this is one interesting & one politically relevant game to have.
So get ready to change those district maps to get those votes & game on!
